The Warren Hotel ~ North Granville, NY
The following photos and text are taken from a 1900s pamphlet titled ~ The Warren, North Granville, NY June — October
THE WARREN is situated in one of the mos healthful and delightful sections of upper New York State, nestling in the historic little hamlet of North Granville, Washington County. Lying at a high elevation among the Adirondack Mountains, it commands an extended view over range after range of mountain peaks and beautiful valleys, as far as eye can reach. The town itself contains churches of all denominations, first-class general stores, banks, post office, long distance telephone, telegraph, and other conveniences.
In structure THE WARREN is elegant in design, and appointments perfect for the accommodation of 150 guests. All rooms are spacious and airy, and in accord with a plan that makes every room an outside room. They are arranged single, connecting and en suite. Every room in the house has been newly painted, decorated and furnished throughout.
THE WARREN is surrounded by about nine acres of land, and in the midst of a beautiful grove of noble pine trees – just the place for hammocks, swings, etc. Here one can enjoy a perfect rest while breathing the balm of the pine and fir. Broad piazzas extend along the entire front of the hotel, well provided with easy chairs and everything to make perfect the comfort of our summer guests.
As the location would indicate, this region is entirely free from anything like malarial influence. Due to the high altitude, the air is dry and invigorating. The winds are modified by the surrounding mountain peaks, which in themselves produce a vista of scenic effect that could hardly be surpassed in Switzerland.
From THE WARREN, in every direction, are to be found delightful walks. One cannot go amiss of an interesting ramble. Among the many nearby hills and mountains we find the celebrated Pinnacle Mountain, situated about one-half mile from THE WARREN. At its summit one gains a vision of over fifty mountain peaks, in the Green, Adirondack, and as far south as the Catskill mountains. This peak is a favorite climb for those who wish to gain a point of vantage to witness the beautiful sunsets that Northern New York boasts of. To the south one feasts their eyes upon three peaks, placed side by side, each almost equal in size and contour, known as the Three Brothers, standing out in bold relief against a azure sky.
Very few people have learned the value of recreation in the forest and by-paths. This country abounds in elegant roads for the cycle, carriage and automobile. Many objects of interest, historic and otherwise, can be found within a short distance. Lake Champlain, Lake George and Lake St. Catherine, Saratoga, are all within easy access for a day’s outing.
Coaching rides are arranged almost daily from THE WARREN. A drive through the beautiful valleys and glens, over ridge and mountain top, makes perfect the trip. A reliable livery is maintained by the management. Special care is given to private equipages and automobiles.
The fast-flowing Mettowee River goes tumbling on through the town, only a few moments’ walk from THE WARREN, following its course down through a rugged and woody valley, forming many beautiful cascades as it rushes over the rock ledges. An hour spent along its banks affords food for the naturalist as well as the lover of the romantic. A half-mile from the hotel it broadens out into what is known as “Indian’s Pool,” a fine stretch of water for swimming and boating. Many beautiful walks are to be found all along this Mettowee River.
THE POND, a beautiful expanse of spring water, clear as crystal, directly back of THE WARREN, also gives opportunity for bathing and boating to the heart’s content. Rustic seats and houses, that have been constructed around the pond and on its islands, form many a secluded nook for the young people. In season the nearby brooks abound in the finny tribe, thus giving enjoyment to the disciples of Izaak Walton.
The WATER SUPPLY of THE WARREN is derived from a valuable spring situated upon the property, which for a century back has given out its precious health giving waters in practically unlimited amount. This spring, known as the “Washington Spring,” is carefully protected, and its water has been analyzed by the New York Health Department, which has recommended it as a very beneficial water, absolutely pure and “fit nectar for the gods or man”.
The Diana Sulphur Spring is also controlled by THE WARREN. Its water is also furnished at all times to our guests. In the maintenance of health there is no more important factor than drinking water, The medical properties of true sulphur water are now fully recognized and highly estimated by our leading physicians as a valuable agent in the treatment of disordered blood and dependent diseases. In the Eastern cities these waters can be delivered to any address at all times of the year.
AMUSEMENTS are never wanting at THE WARREN. All popular outdoor games have been provided for and will be encouraged in every way possible. Nightly concerts or dancing take place in the large Assembly Room, which is well adapted for these pleasures. Suitable music is provided at all times. Two large Parlors are also thrown open to the guests, as well as the spacious Office. The management is desirous of giving every attention possible to further the enjoyment of their guests.
The Dinging Rooms are large, cheerful and well ventilated. Every care is exerted that the cuisine shall be of highest type and a standard for comparison. The Sanitation of THE WARREN has been made the study of an expert. This question should be of prime interest to the party seeking out their summer home. The very latest improvements in plumbing have been introduced in the lavatories and bath-rooms, which have been well provided throughout the house. The system is absolutely perfect. The drainage of the grounds is also cared fro carefully, so that nothing but health-giving properties can be found.
